The Greater Montreal area is under a severe thunderstorm watch on Thursday. “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” said Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). “There is a risk of localized flash flooding.” The storm could hit Thursday afternoon to evening, the agency points out. “Nautical activities may be hazardous due to sudden, severe wind gusts on bodies of water,” ECCC adds, noting that there could also be power outages. The agency explains that heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions in visibility. “Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles,” ECCC states. “Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.” Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions for the development of thunderstorms could lead to damaging hail, wind or rain.
