A “prolonged period” of freezing rain is on its way to the Greater Montreal area on Monday. The system is expected to start on Sunday night, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), “possibly accompanied by ice pellets.” Areas that could be affected include Greater Montreal, Montérégie, Laurentides, Lanaudière, Témiscamingue, Outaouais and the southern Eastern Townships. “Consider changing any non-essential travel plans for this period,” ECCC states. “Travel conditions could become difficult if ice builds up on the roads. Ice accretion could cause tree branches to break. Conditions may be conducive to power outages.” The precarious weather is linked to an intense low-pressure system that is making its way through the Great Lakes region. ECCC admits that there is still some uncertainty surrounding the duration and expected amount of freezing precipitation.
