Truckers protest across Quebec to call for stricter enforcement of regulations

Professional truck drivers blocked bridges and highways this morning to protest deadly crashes involving 18-wheelers and call for better driver training.

Truck drivers gathered on several highways in Quebec on Monday morning to demand stricter enforcement of transportation regulations.

Truckers from the “Assez, c’est assez” (“Enough is Enough”) movement had planned to meet at dawn in Montreal, Quebec City, Trois-Rivières and Gatineau.

The Gatineau demonstration was cancelled.

Their goal was to highlight “illegal truckers,” or untrained drivers behind the wheel of heavy vehicles.

They had made it clear that their goal was to slow down traffic, but not bring it to a complete standstill.

In particular, they had said that they would only drive in the right lane and respect the minimum speed limits.

According to the protest’s organizers, “statistics show an alarming increase in road accidents involving trucks, illustrating the urgency of reform.”

“It is imperative that the government divide the solutions between provincial and federal jurisdictions so that each level fully assumes its responsibilities,” reads their petition. “Among these measures, the implementation of appropriate infrastructure for stricter enforcement of transportation regulations is essential.”

Truckers are also calling for more rigorous vehicle inspections and improved driver training.
