Students march in Westmount for climate action

Hundreds of students took to the streets of Westmount on May 9, 2025 to protest for more climate action.

Despite the rain, 2,000 students from eight schools took to Westmount’s streets Friday morning, calling for urgent action against climate change.

After the march, students gathered at King George Park and called on elected officials to create more bike paths, ban single-use plastics, regulate fast-fashion and add climate education to the curriculum.

“The climate change course can help you better understand and it can give the younger kids more of a chance to help protect their future,” said Jessica Pearce, a student at The Study all-girls school.

Students from kindergarten to grade 11 participated in the march, representing schools from St. George’s School of Montreal, The Study, ECS, Roslyn, St-Léon-de-Westmount, The Priory, Trafalgar, and Villa Maria.

According to a news release, the Climate March has more than tripled in size since its debut in 2023.

“We want to help make our earth clean,” said Keila Cusiac-Barr, a student at Roslyn Elementary School.

Students say their demands require action from all three levels of government. The principal at St. George’s School of Montreal Aidan De Jean says the lines of communication are open.

“We’ve been in close contact to them since last year. They’re committed to staying with us on all these calls to action,” said De Jean.

The students say the climate crisis is urgent.

“If we don’t have Earth, well, we won’t have somewhere to live,” said Jude Guyot, another student at Roslyn Elementary School. “There’s no Earth B. This is our home.”
