Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Montreal area

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the Montreal area — capable of producing very strong wind gusts, heavy rain, and pea to dime size hail — on top of the heat warning in place.

The weather agency expects the storm to hit Sunday afternoon and evening. Some may lose power as a result.

“Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail,” said Environment Canada. “Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.”

Heavy rain could cause flash flooding and significantly reduce visibility on the road.

Winds could reach up to 100 kilometres per hour.

Nautical activities are discouraged and the agency recommends staying inside if you hear thunder.

A heat warning is also in place for the area as the humidex could reach 40 degrees Sunday afternoon.
