Quebec man accused of $1.8M weight-loss scam to be extradited to U.S. after Supreme Court refuses appeal

A Quebec man accused of defrauding consumers through a weight-loss product scheme is set to be extradited to the United States.

Michel Poirier had been contesting his extradition, but the Superior Court of Canada ruled it was convinced he was the person sought by U.S. authorities.

Poirier is suspected of “fraudulently obtaining printing and mailing services used to promote and sell weight loss products by mail order, as well as defrauding consumers who attempted to purchase these products, resulting in losses of approximately $1,795,900 for all victims,” according to the Superior Court’s decision.

The court ordered Poirier to remain in custody pending his extradition to Wisconsin, where he is expected to stand trial.
