Man missing after falling through ice on Rivière des Prairies

Montreal firefighters and police officers were called to the Rivière des Prairies after two men went under the ice Thursday afternoon.

One of the two young men has been rescued near the CEGEP Gérald-Godin, while the other one is still unaccounted for after being swept away by the current.

They were walking on the ice when it gave way under their weight, according to Montreal police spokesperson Florence Stafford.

A large search operation is underway, involving police, firefighters, and paramedics.

Police received a 911 call at 2:35 p.m. and responded to the area of Du Pont Street and Gouin Boulevard West in the city’s Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève borough.

The man who was rescued was conscious when he was sent to hospital and is now considered to be out of danger, Stafford said.

Police have deployed the water tactical unit and a drone to look for the other man who is still missing, and are patrolling the river banks for any sign of him.

The Montreal fire department said they are assisting officers in the search.

As the search continues, officers are speaking with witnesses in the area.
