Longueuil police arrest 2nd teen suspect after brawl, boosting presence near schools

Longueuil police are maintaining an increased presence on Friday around local schools after they arrested a second teenage suspect in connection with a violent altercation that happened near a high school earlier this week.

Tactical officers arrested the 18-year-old man Thursday at around 6 p.m. in Chambly, Que. and credited tips from the public for nabbing the suspect.

According to police, a fight broke out involving several young people at approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday near the parking lot of a shopping centre on Rome Boulevard in Brossard, not far from Antoine-Brossard High School.

During the fight, a victim was stabbed, someone deployed pepper spray, and someone fired at least one gunshot.

Police said in a news release on Friday that the 18-year-old man they arrested in Chambly was responsible for the gunshot. He was sent to the detention centre to be questioned by investigators.

Police made a first arrest Wednesday night — an 18-year-old man who was accused of assault with a weapon. He was questioned and released pending a court appearance.

When police arrived on scene, they found two victims: a person over 18 years old who was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening stab wound and a minor who was assaulted but was not sent to hospital.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and that officers will maintain a presence in the area.

Several disturbing events near Antoine-Brossard High School have been reported to Longueuil police and the Marie-Victorin School Service Centre since the start of the school year, Noovo Info reported.
