Severe penalties have been imposed on a staffing agency and its executive for tax fraud. Alpha et Omega Multiservices and its director, Maria Del Carmen Jimenez Serrano, were ordered by Court of Quebec Judge Geneviève Claude Parayre to pay fines totalling more than $2.15 million. In addition, Serrano was sentenced to three years in prison for these offences. According to the Revenue Québec investigation, the staffing agency provided workers to employers, a large portion of whom were paid in cash. However, Alpha et Omega Multiservices did not pay the full amounts required for income tax, sales tax, and payroll deductions. Both the company and Serrano were found guilty of seven charges under the Tax Administration Act, specifically for willfully evading the payments in question. Both were also found guilty of another charge under the Excise Tax Act, again for willfully evading payment of the tax it imposes. The sentences were handed down two weeks ago, on Aug. 18, at the Montreal courthouse, but were not made public until Monday by Revenu Québec.
