Advance voting begins Sunday in Montreal ahead of municipal election

Advance voting opens across Montreal this Sunday as the city prepares for the upcoming municipal election on Nov. 2

More than 3,200 election workers will be ready to welcome voters at over 200 polling stations across the city. Advance polls will be open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., as required by Quebec law.

Elections Montreal says families are encouraged to come together — children and teens will have a chance to participate through special “mini voting booths” set up at polling stations.

Student voting

The city is launching a student voting pilot project this week in partnership with local universities and CEGEPs.

The initiative begins Friday and will run on select days through Oct. 29 at 16 post-secondary institutions across Montreal.

Montreal is the first municipality in Quebec to implement the program, allowing students registered on the Montreal electoral list to vote at their school, regardless of which borough they live in.

Voting from home for health reasons

On Saturday, mobile voting teams will begin visiting the homes of roughly 1,200 voters who requested to cast their ballot from home for health reasons.

Dozens of Elections Montreal teams will spread out across the city to ensure these voters can participate.

“I’m pleased to see that despite the challenges caused by the postal service interruption, many voters registered to vote or to receive home voting services,” said Emmanuel Tani-Moore, Montreal’s chief electoral officer.

Where and when to vote

Elections Montreal says about 700,000 voting notices are being delivered door-to-door across the city ahead of Sunday’s advance polls. The delivery, which is being carried out by private companies, is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Friday,

Voters can also find their polling location and schedule by visiting elections.montreal.ca, calling 514-872-VOTE (8683), or going to the nearest Elections Montreal service point.

Key dates for Montreal’s municipal election

• Advance voting: Sunday, Oct. 26 (12 p.m. to 8 p.m.)
• Voting at home and in residences: Saturday, Oct. 25 (daytime)
• Voting at the returning officer’s offices:
• Student voting: Oct. 24, 27, 28, and 29 (hours vary by institution)
• Election Day: Sunday, Nov. 2 (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

To vote, residents need one piece of valid identification. The voting notice is not required to cast a ballot.
