Upwards of 3,000 pigs may have perished in a North Middlesex barn fire

An estimated 3,000 pigs are believed to have died following a barn fire in North Middlesex. CTV’s Sean Irvine reports.

It’s estimated upwards of 3,000 pigs may have been lost in a in North Middlesex barn fire on Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Elm Tree Drive around 7 a.m.. As of 10:40 a.m., the road is still closed between Sylvan Road and Roddick Road.

The barn was engulfed when firefighters arrived, and according to North Middlesex Fire Chief Greg Vandenheuvel, it took about two hours for the blaze to be brought under control.

Multiple fire departments, including Lambton Shores, Ailsa Craig and Kerwood were called in to assist.

It’s too soon to say what an estimated dollar value of the loss is, and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been notified.
