Thousands pack Western University’s Homecoming weekend in London

CTV London's Lauren Stallone has the details on Saturday's Homecoming celebrations.

A wave of purple swept through London this weekend as thousands of Western University students and alumni gathered for the school’s annual homecoming celebrations.

The full-day tradition gave students a chance to reconnect and celebrate their school spirit.

“For my last year, I’m just trying to have the best time I can,” one student told CTV News.

Others said the weekend was all about friendships and making memories.

“I’m just looking forward to seeing all the buddies who came out for the big weekend,” another added. “It’s going to be a great time.”

But with the excitement also came concerns. Large crowds filled Broughdale Avenue, a popular party spot near campus, where residents said the aftermath can take a toll.

“Every morning when we wake up after HoCo, our house is trashed,” one student said.

London police called in reinforcements from Hamilton, Windsor and the OPP to manage the crowds. Officers patrolled the streets and kept watch over the festivities.

“Although it happens every year, we want to provide mitigation and safety pieces in place to make sure everyone can enjoy themselves responsibly but be safe at the same time,” said Matt Dawson with London police.

This year, the city also introduced new safety barriers known as vehicle mitigation devices. The barriers are designed to block cars from driving into crowded areas while still allowing police and emergency responders to move through.

With another homecoming now behind them, police say safety planning will remain a top priority in the years ahead.
