Scottish suspects in Sharif Rahman case consent to face charges in Canada

Three Scottish men charged in the death of restauranteur Sharif Rahman have consented to being extradited to Canada.

Three Scottish men, charged in the death of an Owen Sound, Ont., restaurant owner in 2023, have consented to be extradited to Canada.

Robert Evans Jr., 24, is charged with manslaughter, while his father and uncle have been charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence, following the assault and subsequent death of 44-year-old Sharif Rahman on Aug. 17, 2023.

It is alleged that Evans Jr. punched Rahman outside his Owen Sound restaurant, the Curry House, during an argument over an unpaid bill. Evans Jr. then allegedly fled the scene, and ultimately the country, with the help of his father, Robert Evans Sr., and uncle, Barry Evans.

During the men’s extradition hearing in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Monday morning, all three consented to being sent to Canada to face the charges, but the final decision lays with the Scottish government.

It is expected, if a trial is held for the three men in Canada, it would take place in Owen Sound.

There was a huge outpouring of support and sorrow following Rahman’s death in Owen Sound. He was considered a pillar of the community as he helped many local charities after moving to Owen Sound and opening his restaurant in 2015.
