Sarnia’s newest police dog, Shadow, has helped arrest two suspects. On Thursday, Shadow and his partner, Const. Kyle Vince, were sent out twice within an hour, looking for two suspects who tried to run from police. Just before 3 a.m., officers saw a man at the intersection of Davis and Mitton Streets. He was wanted in relation to an intimate partner violence investigation. When the man saw the police, he reportedly ran. The suspect was believed to be hiding under a dumpster. When the suspect was told that Shadow was willing to go into the dumpster, the suspect surrendered. A 32-year-old Sarnia man was charged with criminal harassment, harassing communications, mischief under $5,000 and resisting a peace officer. An hour later, another man was seen on Talfourd Street, who was said to have an outstanding arrest warrant. When the suspect saw the police, he allegedly ran into the backyard of a home. Shadow was sent out and immediately started tracking the man. He was quickly found, hidden behind logs in a yard. The man surrendered after being made aware of Shadow’s presence. A 36-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with theft under $5,000 and two breaches of a probation order. “These two incidents are vivid examples of the value that a police dog offers front-line officers,” the Sarnia Police Service wrote. “In both incidents, the suspects were located within a short period, reducing the length of the investigation and the police resources required to locate them. Furthermore, both times after hearing the police dog, they surrendered themselves into custody.” SPS added that the presence of Shadow reduced the risk to officers and increased compliance, resulting in arrests without incident.
