Goderich man in ‘top 1%’ of worldwide CrossFit athletes

A local will be off to compete in the 2025 Crossfit Games this summer, CTV London's Scott Miller has more on how one of two Canadians to qualify made it happen.

Scott Homan is getting ready to compete against the fittest people on the planet.

“You have to be in the top 1 per cent in the world, to even get to semis, in the first place. And then after that, it’s just the top 30,” says the Goderich CrossFit Athlete.

The 55-year-old Homan who calls Goderich home, has qualified for the 2025 CrossFit Games-Masters Division, happening this August in Ohio, where he’ll compete to be the fittest 55-to-59-year-old in the world.

“For CrossFit, this is like our Olympics,” he says.

Homan, who owns CrossFit Goderich at the Ridge Fitness with his partner, Jennifer Morris, is one of only two Canadians to qualify in his age category for the CrossFit Games. While it looks like he’s been working out his whole life, he only started doing CrossFit, 15 years ago.

“I started CrossFit when I was 40. So I’ve been doing it now for obviously 15 years. It was a time when I needed to make a change. You know, I was kind of a bit overweight, and it had like what some people call the “aha” moment, and it’s like, I need to do something. I need to do it now. So, yeah, I sort of started CrossFit, and I’ve just never really looked back,” he says.

Homan says the combination of strength training and explosive athleticism, that CrossFit entails, appealed to him, but reaching the competitive world of CrossFit is another animal, requiring extreme commitment.

“I work out probably 6 to 7 days a week. Five days are full on training sessions, probably anywhere from 2 to 3 hours a day. My rest days are probably active recovery. So that might be biking, that might be soft jogging. Eating is now paramount, eating the right things. Lots of protein, obviously,” he says.

Morris says there’s a big crew from CrossFit Goderich heading to Ohio for Homan’s CrossFit Games debut. She says while competition may be Homan’s path, CrossFit can be for anyone.

“We have a blind athlete. We have athletes that are adaptive athletes. So things get modified. We have people that, you know, have never squat before in their life, or done a push up or pull up. So, it’s not about just the competition at that level. It’s about competing with yourself, and making small improvements every single day,” says Morris.

Homan says his workout regime will intensify as August nears, and he wants to win, but simply reaching the top 30 fittest CrossFit athletes in the world in his age category, is a huge victory.

“First time ever making it to the championships. A couple times I’ve put an effort in and tried, but it’s tough. It’s tough to make that final cut. So this this time I did,” he says.
