A cold front moving through southwestern Ontario is bringing cooler temperatures and increased cloud cover Thursday, but a stretch of pleasant late-summer weather is on the way. According to CTV News London meteorologist Julie Atchison, the front ushered in cooler air from Lake Huron, leading to mainly cloudy skies with occasional breaks of sunshine across the region. “We have had a cold front come through the area and that is generating a bit of cloud cover with the cool air coming in off Lake Huron,” Atchison said. Temperatures varied considerably across southwestern Ontario Thursday afternoon, with cooler conditions closer to the lake. Atchison said temperatures near the Bruce Peninsula remained between 16 C and 18 C, while London reached about 23 C and Windsor climbed to 26 C. A few lingering showers were also possible, particularly north of London. Light rainfall was reported in parts of northern Huron County, while London faced only a slight chance of precipitation through the late afternoon. “The probability through the late afternoon is just a 30 per cent chance,” Atchison said. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to about 14 C in London as a weak backdoor cold front moves through the region. Atchison said the system will usher in cooler, drier air ahead of the weekend. “High pressure is forecast to build into southwestern Ontario overnight, clearing skies and setting up what forecasters describe as an extended period of comfortable weather.” Conditions on Friday are expected to be mainly sunny, with only a few fair-weather clouds and a daytime high near 23 C. The favourable pattern is expected to continue through the weekend, with sunny skies and temperatures around 26 C on Saturday. Sunday is forecast to bring a mix of sun and cloud, with temperatures remaining in the mid-20s. Atchison said there is a 40 per cent chance of showers Sunday night, although any rainfall is expected to hold off until after sunset. “The next few days are looking good with lots of sunshine in the forecast and some comfortable conditions,” said Atchison.
