Police have seized nearly $15,000 worth of fentanyl after a search warrant in the 900 block of 2nd Avenue east in Owen Sound. According to Owen Sound police, an investigation at the residence yielded 35 grams of fentanyl, and more than $7,000 in cash. A 45-year-old woman and 73-year-old man, both of Owen Sound, have been charged with possession of a schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl), possession of a schedule 1 substance (methamphetamine) and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is as much as 100 times more potent than morphine, and has been a major contributor to the opioid crisis in Canada. Some data indicates that a lethal dose of fentanyl for most people is roughly 2 milligrams. In a statement, Owen Sound police said, “The seizure of fentanyl is particularly significant given the devastating impact this substance continues to have on individuals, families, and communities across Ontario.” The two accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing in Owen Sound.
