No major issues were reported to police despite a crowd of thousands descending upon Chancellors Way during University of Guelph’s Homecoming weekend. In a news release on Tuesday, the Guelph Police Service said more than 10,000 people were on the busy street at the height of the unsanctioned party on Saturday afternoon. Chancellors Way and Edinburgh Road South were closed between Stone Road West and Wilsonview Avenue to protect partiers. “The Guelph Police Service experienced large crowds but are reporting no major incidents during University of Guelph Homecoming celebrations,” the release said. Police worked with the university’s Campus Safety Office, City of Guelph Bylaw Enforcement, Guelph-Wellington Paramedic Services and the Guelph Fire Department throughout the celebration. The most serious incident involved three people being treated by paramedics after they were sprayed with an unknown noxious substance at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Sunday. A suspect ran off and that investigation is ongoing. Officers issued more than 80 tickets under the Liquor Licence Act and bylaw officers were called to more than 80 noise complains across the city between Saturday morning and early Sunday. In 2024, several people were taken to hospital due to intoxication and fireworks were shot into the crowd of partiers, but no one was hurt. A man from Etobicoke also told police he had been stabbed.
