Eight motorists were taken off the road for stunt driving in Guelph over the holiday weekend, including a novice driver police say was travelling more than twice the posted speed limit. Just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday, a Guelph Police Service traffic officer conducting speed enforcement on Gordon Street near Clair Road clocked a vehicle travelling 137 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. Police said the driver was a 16-year-old boy from Wellington County. He was charged with stunt driving, speeding and careless driving. His licence was suspended for 30 days and the family’s SUV was impounded for 14 days. Seven other drivers were stopped for stunt driving over the weekend, with speeds ranging from 41 km/h to 55 km/h over the posted speed limit. Police said a stunt driving conviction carries a minimum one-year licence suspension, a fine of at least $2,000 and six demerit points. Criminal driving charges may also be laid in extreme cases. With students returning to school this week, police are reminding motorists to slow down and watch for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. The Guelph Police Service said the posted 30 km/h speed limit in school zones applies 24 hours a day. Police will also be increasing traffic enforcement throughout September as part of an ongoing road-safety initiative aimed at helping ensure a safe return to school.
