An assault-style rifle was recovered by officers responding to a weapons call in downtown Guelph. On Tuesday, someone reported a resident with a gun at an apartment building near Wellington Street West and Gordon Street. Guelph Police said a 24-year-old man was arrested in the hallway around 1:40 p.m. A bag, containing a Derya Arms .22-calibre rifle with a loaded extended magazine, was also discovered outside the building. “Our community has seen a disturbing number of firearm-related offences in recent weeks. This presents increased risks for our citizens and our members,” Chief Gord Cobey said in a media release. “We continue to work diligently to identify and disrupt those involved in illegal activities to prevent further incidents and keep our neighbourhoods safe.” The 24-year-old was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm.
