Prince Albert is mourning the loss of Shaun Farrell, a 23-year-old man from the community who died in Saturday’s fire at the Wainwright Canadian Forces Base. Pte. Farrell was one of four service members who lost their lives. The 23-year-old was also a treasured part of Prince Albert’s rugby community. “The Prince Albert Rugby community is deeply saddened by the loss of Shaun. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones,” wrote Prince Albert Rugby in a statement to CTV News. “Shaun was a former member of our Junior team. He was a valued teammate who was always ready to stand up for those around him.” Farrell’s family immigrated to Canada from South Africa and he attended Carlton Comprehensive High School. The city of Prince Albert is flying its flags at half mast in honour of Farrell’s death. “PA is a compassionate community,” said Mayor Bill Powalinsky. “We are a sensitive community. We’re a community of belonging, and we definitely want to be the community that supports each other in times such as this.” A book has been set out at city hall for those who wish to share their condolences. “Many of our service people not only work in peacekeeping or combat operations, but perform civilian-related duties,” Powalinsky added, acknowledging the work of Prince Albert’s service members. “It is with both pride in the people that dedicate themselves to the service of others, but it is with grief when we lose one of our own.” On Sunday, Pte. Farrell’s family made a public Facebook post thanking everyone for their love, support, and prayers. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our son, Shaun Farrell, has passed away to be with our Heavenly Father,” the post read. It wraps up with the family asking for privacy while they “navigate this profound loss.” Condolences from across the country have been pouring in online and the city says it will announce any upcoming plans to further honour Pte. Farrell.
