New details have been shared about the EF0 tornado that touched down just south of Woodstock on Aug. 8. The Northern Tornadoes Project, based at Western University in London, examined the destruction left behind. “The tornado developed just outside the city and travelled three kilometres into the city’s west side before dissipating,” they reported. Investigators said its path was approximately 2.97 kilometres long and, at its widest point, 50 metres across. Wind gusts were estimated at 90 km/h. An EF0 tornado is considered the lowest on the scale. City crews were tasked with removing downed trees, branches and other debris. Vehicles were also hit by falling trees, and a fence was damaged at the city’s cricket pitch. The Northern Tornadoes Project said only one twister touched down in the area on Aug. 8, despite initial concerns raised by residents. “Sporadic damage to trees on the northeast side of Woodstock (many compromised by conditions such as rot or root girdling) was due to straight-line winds and was not related to the tornado,” the report said.
