Transport truck driver wanted for fatal hit-and-run crash on Highway 401 identified

Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that hit and killed a tow truck driver on Highway 401. CTV’s Colton Wiens reports.

Ontario Provincial Police said they have identified the driver of a transport truck who allegedly hit and killed a tow truck driver on Highway 401.

The tow truck driver was helping a stranded motorist in the westbound lanes near Oxford Road 3, around 7:18 a.m. Wednesday, when the 42-year-old Kitchener man was hit by a passing vehicle.

He died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

OPP then released a picture of a blue transport truck, which they called a “vehicle of interest.”

On Thursday, they shared an update on the investigation.

“The OPP have located that vehicle and identified the driver,” Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said in a video posted to social media. “No further information will be released at this time as the investigation continues.”

It’s not known if any charges have been laid against the driver.

“A sincere thank you to everyone that provided information,” Sanchuk said.

Drivers must, by law, slow down when passing a tow truck with flashing amber lights and move over if they can do so safely.
