Police seize hundreds of fraudulent gift cards in Kitchener

Waterloo Regional Police say they have seized hundreds of fraudulent gift cards following a “proactive initiative” in Kitchener.

Police said at around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, members of the Direct Action Response Team (DART) were patrolling near retail businesses when they were alerted to a theft in progress at a store on Highland Road West.

Investigators said a male suspect was observed concealing gift cards and replacing legitimate cards with tampered ones before leaving the store.

Officers located and arrested the suspect nearby. Police said more than 550 gift cards from multiple retailers were seized, with an estimated value between $27,500 and $133,000 if activated.

A 39-year-old man from Markham has been charged with theft under $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing.

Police are reminding the public to take precautions when purchasing gift cards, including inspecting packaging for signs of tampering, ensuring PINs are not exposed, buying from reputable retailers and keeping receipts.

Anyone who believes a gift card may have been compromised is encouraged to report it to the retailer immediately.
