New Conestoga College program offers low-cost pet grooming services

A new program is giving pet owners the chance to pamper their furry friends. CTV’s Alexandra Holyk reports.

Pampering your pet just got a little more affordable, thanks to a new program at Conestoga College.

The year-long pet grooming program provides students with hands-on learning opportunities while offering services at little to no cost.

“It’s not based on the size of the dog, it’s just based on what we’re planning to do with that dog and what services we’re offering,” said animal programs chair Andrea Steele. “Cats are exactly the same.”

A wash and brush costs around $10, while a full cut can run pet owners up to $20.

“I think it’s amazing to be able to charge low, to help people who need it and can’t get it, and then we all get this experience,” said pet grooming student Maya Hau-Robinet. “I don’t think you can learn this career without having that experience.”

Students, staff and pet owners said the low cost comes with a high reward.

“It’s good for the owner, it’s good for the dog, and the students — it’s the best way to learn,” said pet owner Jazi Folger.

The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including treatment of skin and coats, animal behaviour and handling, first aid, self-care, and running a business. Students start by learning how to wash and brush dogs before moving to more complex cuts and cat grooming.

The salon is located at Conestoga College’s Doon campus, where students can take what they learned and apply it to real clients.

“We can oversee and control all the dogs that come in, and we’ve been able to really give back to the community,” said Nicole Greer, the program’s grooming technologist.

Before getting groomed, eligible pets are brought in for a walk-through to ensure they’re comfortable with the students and the equipment.

“We can handle a lot of minor behavioural things, and it’s actually really good for the students to experience,” said Steele. “But we do have to make sure that things will be safe, and we do want to make sure that the animal is going to be relaxed while they’re here for services.”

The salon also provides free services to cats and dogs at local shelters and rescues.

“Hopefully that will enhance their opportunity for adoption by being professionally groomed,” Steele said.

With the current cohort of students wrapping up on Friday, a new group is expected to start next month. However, for the first few weeks, the salon will only offer baths and brushing while the students develop their skills.

Those interested in getting their cat or dog groomed as part of the program are asked to fill out an intake form.
