Waterloo funeral home plans to move to Kitchener and build new crematorium

A meeting was held Thursday night to discuss a plan by Erb & Good Funeral Home to transform a former Home Hardware store into a crematorium.

The funeral home is moving their operations from Waterloo to Kitchener.

To make it happen, they have applied for a zoning amendment to modify the building on Victoria Street North, between River Road East and Frederick Street, to include three human cremation units which would located at the back of the building near the railroad line.

“It would be to the rear of the site, more adjacent to the existing rail line,” explained Dave Aston, from MHBC Planning, at a neighbourhood meeting on Thursday. “It would be in the back corner of the existing building, and any of the associated stacks would be located to the rear of the building and have appropriate screening.”

Aston said the footprint of the existing building would not change significantly.

No decisions are expected on the zoning application until the fall when the matter will be taken up at a formal committee and council meetings.
