Investigation underway into suspicious Kitchener house fire

A house fire in Kitchener that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage is now being treated as suspicious. CTV's Hannah Schmidt has the details.

A house fire in Kitchener that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage is now being treated as suspicious, Waterloo Regional Police say.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Major Street around 6 a.m., for reports of a structure fire. The blaze was contained to the rear addition of the home, though officials noted the damage was significant.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters conducted extensive searches after learning at least one person may have been inside the home at the time, but no one was found.

Neighbours told CTV News multiple people lived in the home.

On Sunday, investigators were seen conducting interviews with the residents and owner of the home.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office visited the home on Monday to examine the damage.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
