Caribana Ignite Festival returning to downtown Kitchener in August

The sights and sounds of Carnival will return to downtown Kitchener this summer as the third annual Caribana Ignite Festival takes place Aug. 21 and 22.

Organizers say the event has quickly become one of Ontario’s fastest-growing Caribbean cultural celebrations and are inviting revellers from across the province to participate in this year’s festivities.

The festival is open to mas bands, section leaders, performers and individuals with Carnival costumes from anywhere in the world. All participants in the parade must register online by April 30. Organizers say round-trip transportation, based on availability, will be provided from Toronto, London and Hamilton.

The two-day event begins Aug. 21 with a family Glow Party in the downtown core featuring music, lights and dancing. The Carnival Parade will take place Aug. 22, followed by a street party in front of Kitchener City Hall.

Mayor Berry Vrbanovic said the festival has become a highlight of the city’s summer calendar.

“We’re thrilled to welcome performers, families and revelers from across Ontario to share the joy, creativity and vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture that this event brings to our streets,” Vrbanovic said in a media release. ”Festivals like Caribana Ignite strengthen our community and remind us of the power of celebration to bring people together.”

Festival director Geraldine Stafford said organizers are aiming to recreate the spirit and nostalgia associated with traditional Caribbean Carnival celebrations.

“That spirit, that nostalgia, is exactly what we set out to recreate — and it is why the concept of ‘re‑wine’ resonates so strongly,“ a statement read in part. ”Whether you’ve played mas in Trinidad, St. Lucia, Grenada, Miami, or anywhere the Caribbean diaspora celebrates, we are calling all revelers to join us on the road. We are deeply grateful to the City of Kitchener for its continued support in welcoming Carnival in such a bold and vibrant way to the heart of the downtown core.”
