Disney has shared a first look at its next animated feature, which is due to hit theaters in late 2016.

"Moana" is to be directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, the duo behind "The Great Mouse Detective," "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "The Princess and the Frog." Set 2,000 years ago among the islands of the South Pacific, the movie centers on an intrepid young heroine, Moana, who is joined by the demi-god Maui in her quest to discover a fabled island.

The adventure is expected to focus on marine settings and characters, as according to a description from Disney, Moana will "traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore."

Before premiering "Moana" in late 2016, Disney will release "Big Hero 6" on November 7 and "Zootopia" in March 2016.
