Toronto's 35th annual Pride parade took on a celebrity tone this year.

Elton John's husband David Furnish, an east-end Toronto native and filmmaker, was the grand marshal of the festivities.

And entertainers who took part included singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper and Russian feminist punk-rock band Pussy Riot.

Cool temperatures and a constant drizzle didn't seem to dampen spirits at the parade.

Huge crowds lined the route, waving flags, dressing in outrageous costumes and proudly displaying their pride in the largest event of its kind in the country.

Politicians marching in yesterday's parade included federal party leaders Thomas Mulcair of the NDP, Liberal Justin Trudeau and Elizabeth May of the Greens.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne -- Canada's first openly gay premier -- along with provincial leaders Patrick Brown of the PCs and New Democrat Andrea Horwath, were also there, as was Toronto Mayor John Tory.

Tory's predecessor, Rob Ford, had snubbed the event during his controversial term as mayor.
