Tre Ford is a free agent. The Edmonton Elks released the quarterback on Friday to “give him the opportunity to pursue other professional opportunities,” Ed Hervey, the general manager of the Canadian Football League team, said in a media release. Ford was due to receive a $110,000 roster bonus on Sunday. And with the Elks having signed Cody Fajardo to be their starting signal-caller next season, Ford, who had two years left on his contract at $327,000 per season, was the odd man out. “We believe a fresh start is in the best interests of both Tre and the organization,” Hervey said. “This decision should not be viewed as a reflection of Tre’s character or ability as a player, but rather as a strategic move aligned with our goal of building the most competitive football team possible for 2026.” The Elks drafted the University of Waterloo product in the first round of the 2022 CFL Draft. The 27-year-old went 7-7 when handed the starting reins in 2023 and 2024, passing for 3,206 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He added 828 yards and three touchdowns rushing. The Elks went 1-4 with Ford under centre to start 2025, with the Niagara Falls, Ont., native throwing for 984 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions (152 yards, one touchdown rushing) before Fajardo, 33, took over signal-calling in late July. The Elks finished the season 7-11, good for last place in the five-team West Division.
