Here’s a look at some of the weather stories making headlines around the world this past week, including a large wildfire in Australia. Wildfire swept through Australia, burning up more than 400,000 hectares, an area more than four times the size of the City of Edmonton. More than 500 structures were destroyed and more than 15,000 livestock were killed as a result of a dozen major bushfires. Conditions have improved, but many communities remain on alert as forecasters say fires could flare up again next week. In the Republic of Kosovo, there has been prolonged, heavy rain that has caused widespread flooding. Fifteen to 25 centimetres of rain fell over the span of several days. Rivers were overflowing and officials are on alert for potential landslides. Power outages were also reported after some electrical substations were flooded. Torrential rain also hit British Columbia this past week. That region has been hit with several atmospheric rivers this winter and this latest one produced some localized flooding. West Vancouver recorded more than 100 millimetres, about 10 centimetres of rain over the course of three days. Parts of Vancouver Island had between 10 and 20 centimetres of rain over that timeframe.
