Wild weather: U.K. growing warmer, tornado shuts down IndyCar practice

CTV Edmonton's Josh Classen recaps a week of wild weather: U.K.'s temperature rising, a tornado in Iowa, and more flooding in the U.S.

U.K. heatwave

As the U.K. baked in a third heatwave this summer, a new climate report was released that shows record-breaking heat is occurring more often than in the past.

The U.K. has been warming at about one-quarter of a degree per decade since the 1980s.

The number of days 10 degrees above average has quadrupled.

This latest heatwave saw temperatures about 15 degrees hotter than average.

The heat damaged a rail line which had to be closed, affecting thousands of fans trying to get to a Stereophonics concert.

As well, a number of sporting events were cancelled or postponed. At Wimbledon, no cancellation, but they did tie the record for the hottest women’s final as temperatures hit 31 C.

Tornado at IndyCar race

A tornado and severe thunderstorms impacted an IndyCar race in Iowa.

A tornado touched down about two kilometres from the speedway during Friday’s practice sessions.

Thousands of spectators were sent to shelter and the practice sessions were cancelled.

More flooding in the U.S.

More deadly flooding in the southern US.

Just days after the devastating floods in Texas, torrential rain triggered flash flooding in New Mexico.

At least three people were killed and about 200 homes were damaged.

One home was even ripped off the foundation and was caught on camera floating away in the floodwaters.

That region was affected by a wildfire last summer than made this flooding even worse. Fire scars in the landscape aren’t able to absorb as much rain and this storm dumped near nine centimetres (90 mm) of rain in just 90 minutes.
