A festival of treats, drinks and local businesses has returned to the Old Strathcona area. Sweet Treats and Latte Festival kicked off Thursday and runs through the weekend with more than 40 participating businesses. Organizers say this year’s event has seen huge growth. “Normally, we have between 25 and 30 that participate. This year we’re all the way up at 41 businesses, so it’s a 35 per cent increase in participation,” said Andrea Donini, the interim executive director of the Old Strathcona Business Association. Of the 41 businesses participating, 15 are new to the festival and seven of those recently opened this past year. Some of the feature items from the area’s cafes, bakeries, restaurants and pubs include ice cream, cookies, lattes, and bubble tea. “Everybody always enjoys a good excuse to get out and this one provides a really nice, budget friendly way to do that,” Donini added. “Doesn’t matter who you are from all walks of life and it’s happening throughout the day and night.” Edmontonians are also being encouraged to collect stamps on a “Sweet Treats” card for a chance to win prizes from Old Strathcona businesses. The association believes this festival is important to the reinvestment of the downtown area. “January and February are traditionally much slower for the hospitality industry and for retail as well. It’s really good if we can get out and remember to support local,” said Donini. Cards are available at Sweet Treats locations starting today. Once you collect a certain amount of stickers from participating businesses, you’ll be entered into a draw for a chance to win different prizes. More information can be found online.
