Standing measles exposure advisory issued for all of Parkland County

The province is warning the public of a measles exposure advisory for all of Parkland County until further notice.

All people living, working or attending school in or travelling to the county immediately west of Edmonton are being asked to stay aware of their current risk for the infectious disease.

Anyone who was born in or after 1970 and has fewer than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine, or who has never had measles, may be at risk for developing the disease. They may be asked to take additional precautions if visiting a health-care facility in the county.

Symptoms of measles include a fever of 38.3 C or higher; cough, runny nose or red eyes; and a rash that appears three to seven days after a fever starts, usually starting behind the ears and face and spreading down the body.

If symptoms of measles develop, people are asked to stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider.

If you think you have been exposed and are not vaccinated, you may be able to receive immunization to reduce the risk of infection. A dose vaccine needs to be given within 72 hours of exposure.

Babies under the age of one, people with severely weakened immune systems and those who are pregnant may be able to receive immunoglobulin within six days of exposure to prevent the disease.
