Province launches new 511 official road reports system

On February 4, 2013, the province launched its new road reports service: 511. The service offers Albertans the latest information on road conditions through an interactive map that also displays construction updates, detours, closures, border crossing wait times, national and provincial park information and highway photos taken by more than 100 highway cameras.

Alberta motorists have a new source to help make their drive easier, as the province launched its new road reports system ‘511’ on Monday.

By logging onto 511.alberta.ca, calling 511 or following @511Alberta, drivers can get the latest information on road conditions on provincial highways through an interactive map that also displays construction updates, detours, closures, border crossing wait times, national and provincial park information and highway photos taken by more than 100 highway cameras.

“It’s a really great interactive tool if you’re planning your trips and want to make sure you know what the road conditions are so you can get yourself and your loved ones where you’re going and back safely,” Transportation Minister Riv McIver said in a video showing off the new service.

Before 511, Alberta Transportation and the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) had been providing road reports on AMA’s website since 1927, with data provided by the province.

“We’re moving those reports over on to our website,” McIver said.

The new service cost $314,000, with half of that cost funded by the federal government through the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program.

Monday’s launch is considered the first phase of the 511 service.

The province says future phases may include more features and information based on traveller feedback and needs.

McIver said 511 is currently being used in provinces and states across Canada and the U.S. for traffic reports.

“We’re catching on to a north American-wide trend and we hope to improve on it,” McIver said.
