Pregnant wife of Edmonton man shot in his own driveway describes shock of losing husband

The wife of an Edmonton man who was fatally shot last week says her husband appeared happy and relaxed just hours before he was killed.

Inderpal Singh, 40, was shot in the driveway of his southeast Edmonton home shortly after 12:30 a.m. on June 4 as he was returning home from work as an Uber driver.

His pregnant wife says she went grocery shopping with him in the afternoon and they picked up their daughter from school before he went to work in the late afternoon.

“He had tea and some snacks, and he was so relaxed. There was nothing on his face like fear or if somebody was threatening, there was nothing like that,” she told CTV News Edmonton. “At 4 p.m. he said, ‘I’m going to work now.’”

She says she would usually speak to her husband while he was working, but as she’s nearly 40 weeks pregnant, she rested on Wednesday evening instead.

“Around 12 a.m. his car was outside on the driveway. We can see from the room window,” she said.

“Then after one minute, I heard shooting.”

She said she didn’t know where the shooting was coming from, but she knew her husband was outside and she was worried about him.

“When we went out, I saw he was already bleeding, his head was against the door. He was unconscious.”

“The window glass was not broken, so I used my fist to break it. On the driver’s side. Both sides, not broken, only cracked with the bullets. I noticed some bullets on the driveway.”

She said her husband was still breathing when she got to him, but he died about two minutes later.

“I’m still in shock.”

The Edmonton Police Service won’t say if Singh’s killing was targeted or random.

His wife says he was a family man.

“No conflicts with anyone, no issues. He never, he never discussed something being suspicious at home. Everything was normal with a normal life.”

The family had only been in Canada since 2022 after emigrating from Hong Kong, where they had lived since 2011.

They moved into the southeast Edmonton home last November.

She is due with her second child later this month. The couple also has a nine-year-old daughter.

“She’s missing him but she is so smart, and she knows that I am in pain and she wants to hide her emotions,” she said.

“I’m dealing with that and also telling her, ‘If you feel anything, you feel you can tell me. You can discuss with me. You can see that I’m crying. So you can also cry if you want to.’”
