How to protect your vehicle from theft: police

As RCMP officer search for dozens of vehicle connected to a car-theft ring, they have tips for drivers to protect themselves

After several people were charged with nearly 100 offences in connection with a vehicle theft ring, police are encouraging vehicle owners to stay vigilant.

“Criminals are adapting to the tools and techniques that auto manufacturers are using to prevent thefts,” said Staff Sgt. Luke Halvorson with the RCMP Community Safety Unit.

While criminals are getting more sophisticated in their methods, Halvorson said most vehicles in Alberta are stolen with the keys in them.

“The number one thing that people can do is not leave their keys in the vehicle and not leave the vehicle running,” said Halvorson.

He said drivers can also take other precautions like parking in a garage or a well-lit spot.

Investing in anti-theft mechanisms like a steering wheel lock, a RFID pouch or third-party trackers can help keep your vehicle safe from thieves, said Halvorson.

He also suggests reporting lost or stolen IDs to the police and to check at the registry office if you have a vehicle registered under your name that doesn’t belong to you.

It’s important to check the Carfax report on your vehicle as well as the VIN and vehicle standards decal to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with, which could indicate that the vehicle was stolen.
