Dozens of power outages were reported across central and northern Alberta as high winds gusted near 100 km/h in some areas Thursday night. In a social media post, ATCO said crews and contractors are working to restore power and advised people to stay 10 metres away from downed lines. Fortis Alberta said it is responding to widespread wind-related outages affecting about 1,500 customers in the province’s north. “The strong winds have caused downed poles, trees on lines and damage to wires,” said an email from Fortis, adding that the estimated restoration for current outages is 10 p.m. Customers can check their status online. Edmonton and Calgary were not impacted by the outages. A wind warning was issued for Camrose, Vegreville, south Edmonton to Medicine Hat with gusts forecasted to get up to 90 km/h. Fort McMurray was not included in the wind warning area, but saw gusts around 80 km/h. The wind is expected to gradually ease up over Thursday evening as a weather system brings in cooler temperatures after a week of record-setting highs.
