Former Alberta RCMP officer charged 6 years after shooting

A retired RCMP officer has been charged with aggravated assault in a 2019 shooting in central Alberta.

A retired RCMP officer has been charged with aggravated assault after an investigation that’s been ongoing since 2019.

On April 6, 2019, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) started looking into a case that involved an RCMP stolen property investigation in Eckville where an officer shot the occupant of a vehicle in the cheek.

In a release Tuesday, ASIRT said the evidence gathered during their investigation “provided reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed.”

The information was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), who decided that “the evidence met its standard for prosecution … the involved officer should be charged.”

Geordie Erickson was charged with aggravated assault on Monday and released on an appearance notice.

Erickson is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 28 in Red Deer.
