EHS-Alberta begins process for acquiring new ambulance contracts

Emergency Health Services (EHS) is in the process of acquiring new contracts for ground ambulance services in the province.

EHS-Alberta plans to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP), a competitive vetting process for ambulance services in summer 2026 to identify new contracts.

The process is routine and meant to replace current agreements set to expire on Sept. 30, 2026, according to a media release from Acute Care Alberta. The summer procurement process is looking for new 10-year service agreements.

There are currently 30 contracts with ambulance service partners delivering emergency health services across the province.

EHS-Alberta manages all elements of the current emergency medical system, including air and ground ambulance, interfacility transfers and dispatch operations.

The service is currently being transitioned away from Alberta Health Services oversight and will run under the newer provincial body, Acute Care Alberta.

The group expects contract extensions to be in place before the Sept. 30 expiration and new contracts to be in place by September 2027. EHS-Alberta says it doesn’t anticipate interruptions to service.
