Edmonton weather: Wind howls and temperatures slip

Windy in Edmonton today, wind light tomorrow and temperatures up and down.

Wind picked up overnight and the gusts will continue throughout the day in Edmonton and right across central and eastern Alberta.

Gusts in the city are expected to be in the 40 to 60 km/h range with sustained wind speeds of 20-30 km/h.

Further east, gusts could approach 90 km/h and wind warnings are in effect for areas Camrose/Vegreville/Edmonton south to Medicine Hat.

Fort McMurray has also recorded gusts up around 80 km/h, but isn’t currently included in the warning area.

The wind should gradually ease up tonight in the Edmonton area.

Cooler air is settling in after a record-setting Wednesday.

39 new record highs were set in Alberta yesterday, with many areas hitting double digits.

Most of the province will still be above average today, but a lot closer to the freezing mark this afternoon as temperatures fall throughout the morning and afternoon.

In Edmonton and area, we’ll be around the freezing mark for a daytime high again Friday.

But...east-central and northeast Alberta could be in the -10 to -15 range Friday afternoon.

We’ll get some big swings in temperature through the weekend in Edmonton.

Warmer air presses back in from the west on Saturday as temperatures jump into the 5 to 8 degree range in Edmonton.

Then...another blast of cooler air pushes the daytime high to around or slightly below zero on Sunday.

Looking ahead to next week - Mild temperatures are expected through Mon/Tue (probably slightly above zero). A much bigger cooldown is coming for the end of next week.
