Edmonton weather: Frosty mornings, mild afternoons

The nice weather continues with a warm Tuesday and warmer days to follow.

We’re in a little bit of a cooldown across the province.

Monday’s daytime high was the coolest since Feb. 20 (which was also the last time we had an afternoon high below 5 C).

Mornings have been ridiculously warm too. The average LOW for the past 11 days was just -1.7 C.

That’s slightly warmer than the historical average HIGH from that timeframe and about 12 C above the historical average low for late February/early March.

So, that’s part of the reason it may have felt a little “chillier” yesterday and this morning. Yes, temperatures are still on the mild side, but it’s a lot cooler out there than the previous week-and-a-half.

We’ll stay in that “cooler” airmass for another day or two. Afternoon highs will be in the 2 to 4 degree range today and Wednesday.

Mornings in the -6 to -11 range Wednesday/Thursday.

But, this isn’t the start of a larger cooling trend. Another bubble of warm air will push in from the southwest toward the end of the week and afternoon highs will get close to the 10 C mark again this coming weekend.

(the other thing to note for this weekend is time change. Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday as clocks “spring forward” one hour).

No snow is expected for the Edmonton region over the coming days. However, northeastern AB will get a shot of snow tonight/early Wednesday.

The foothills and mountain parks will get some snow on Wednesday.

Looking LONG range - a bigger cooldown is anticipated for next week.

It won’t be a nasty deep freeze. But, afternoon temperatures will drop back into the -1 to -5 range for Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday of next week.

Mornings around the -10 C mark are likely and we might even get a shot of some fresh snow on Monday ahead of that cooldown.
