Edmonton Boston Pizza giving fans the chance to smell victory as Oilers look to advance

Boston Pizza's championship spray smells like champagne, cheap lager and sweaty hockey gear, and it's only available in Canadian cities with playoff teams

The Oilers are one win away from beating the Kings in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and Boston Pizza came up with a fun, and smelly, way to drum up support for the home team.

The last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup was in 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens claimed victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

That got Boston Pizza wondering if people were curious about what a win might smell like. Yes – smell like – specifically, if you were in the locker room.

The result is the Champion Room Spray.

“Due to the 31-year losing streak, people have kind of lost faith that there’s going to be a Canadian win, and we just want to try and instill some humor into it,” said Bob Adams, a Boston Pizza franchise owner.

“It smells like a locker room, a winning locker room.”

What does that smell like, you might wonder? According to Boston Pizza, it smells like “bubbly champagne, Canadian lager, used hockey pucks and the undeniable musk of sweaty hockey gear.”

Anyone who feels the need to smell this fragrance for themselves can get a bottle at the Ice District Boston Pizza, though quantities are limited.

Adams said that there has been a lot of interest when people hear about the scent, but “once they smell it, that’s about the end of it.”

Yet, some fans are convinced that the smell of victory is helping to manifest wins for the Oilers.

“Ever since we sprayed it, we came back from a two-nothing deficit,” said Oilers fan Shawn Green.

“It smells like an atmosphere … and it has to have pure love and teamwork through hard times and good times. This stuff works.”

Green has played hockey and said while the spray has a “familiar odour,” it’s not quite as bad as a real dressing room.

And for some, the scent is actually quite pleasant.

“It’s awesome, it smells really good,” said Montreal Canadiens fan Joel Demars.

Sadly for Demars, the Canadiens were eliminated from the playoffs Wednesday by the Capitals, meaning the spray may be as close as he can get to victory.

The Edmonton location is one of only four locations the spray is available, the others being in Winnipeg, Toronto and Kanata.

Puck drops for Game 6 between the Oilers and the Kings at 8 p.m. at Rogers Place.
