City and Otipemisiwak Métis Government celebrate Métis Week

Dozens of people including Edmonton mayor Andrew Knack gathered at city hall for the official proclamation of Métis Week.

The City of Edmonton and Otipemisiwak Métis Government recognized Métis Week at city hall Wednesday with a proclamation and cultural celebration.

Métis Week honours the life and legacy of Louis Riel who was executed on Nov. 16, 1885, and celebrates the culture and achievements of Métis people.

“Métis Week reminds us that the spirit of the Métis Nation continues to grow through language, art and leadership that enrich our city every day,” said Mayor Andrew Knack.

In 2024, a memorandum of shared recognition and cooperation was signed by the city and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, reaffirming an active government-to-government relationship.

“The Otipemisiwak Métis Government values the strong government-to-government partnership with the City of Edmonton,” said Andrea Sandmaier, president of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. “Métis citizens have always been builders of this city, from its earliest days to today. Through this partnership, we are creating new opportunities for our citizens and ensuring our voices and perspectives are reflected in the decisions that shape Edmonton’s future.”

The public event saw fiddlers and dancers as well as words from the Sandmaier, Knack and others.
