Alberta’s police watchdog says an RCMP officer in Blackfalds has been charged with offences related to allegations of intimate partner violence. A statement from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said an officer was arrested on Tuesday and charged with assault, uttering threats, unlawful confinement, and intimidation. The officer was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 24. ASIRT said it will not be releasing the name of the officer in order to protect the identity of the victim. “This decision was made to prioritize a trauma-informed approach and the privacy of the victim, while also ensuring public transparency that a police officer has been criminally charged,” said Katherine Murphy, CEO of the Police Review Commission. As the matter is before the courts, ASIRT said it will not be releasing further details. CTV News Edmonton reached out to RCMP to learn the status of the officer’s employment, but information was not readily available at the time.
