A man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with what appears to be a random attack in southwest Edmonton on Wednesday. Police said they were called about a suspicious person near 121 Street and 35 Avenue S.W. at about 1 p.m. Arriving officers said they found a 27-year-old man “acting suspiciously.” While investigating the area, they found a 65-year-old man dead in a garage nearby. Rohan Sheehan was a worker at a job site nearby and saw the arrest while he was on a break. “(It was) surprising. It’s like 100 feet from us while we were taking lunch,” he said. Sheehan said the man who was arrested appeared to be in work clothing and wasn’t trying to leave the area. He described the arrest as “mellow.” “(Police) pulled him out of the house, he wasn’t running or anything. He wasn’t even handcuffed to start. He was just talking to them,” Sheehan said. “Then they put him in handcuffs and then everyone else rolled up, but it wasn’t crazy at all.” The victim was identified as Sugeng Pariono. An autopsy on Thursday determined he died from blunt force trauma and that his death was a homicide. Oleksii Iskra was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Police said the men did not know each other. Court records show Iskra was charged with assault on May 16. He was scheduled to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice on Friday for both charges. No other information about the attack has been released.
