A suspected lightning strike has ignited an out-of-control wildfire on northern Vancouver Island, prompting an aerial and ground response to a remote mountainside near Woss. The blaze, discovered Tuesday near Kaipit Lake, is estimated at 4.75 hectares and is expected to grow as hot, dry conditions persist across the region. The B.C. Wildfire Service has deployed two initial attack crews, a response officer, two helicopters and an airtanker to contain the fire. Despite the fire’s growth, officials say it is not currently threatening homes or critical infrastructure. There are no evacuation alerts, evacuation orders or area restrictions in place near the wildfire. Campfire prohibitions remain in effect across southern and central Vancouver Island as elevated fire danger continues in many parts of the region.
