A non-exhaustive list of Edmonton events this long weekend

The city of festivals continues to live up to its name this weekend, but there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the sun if you’re looking for a more low-key long weekend.

The Edmonton Heritage Festival is back for its 52nd year at the Edmonton Expo Centre and Exhibition Grounds.

It’s the country’s biggest celebration of cultural food and music, with 66 pavilions each representing a different country this year. It starts Saturday and runs until Monday.

Entry is free and food can be purchased by cash or card.

The Edmonton Food Bank will also be at the Heritage Festival all weekend to collect donations of non-perishable food or money. A list of ways to donate can be found on their website.

If you’re willing to drive a little, the Big Valley Jamboree is on in Camrose until Sunday. It’s a weekend of dancing, markets and shows headlined by Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean and Bailey Zimmerman. Tickets are available on their website.

It’s also the last weekend to check out Big Bounce Canada, the world’s largest traveling inflatable park. They pack up their 32-foot tall bouncy castle on Sunday.

If moving and grooving isn’t your thing during Edmonton’s heat wave, there are also plenty of opportunities to hang out by the water.

And for the fans of air conditioning, the West Edmonton Mall is host to the Hoop City 3X3 Festival from Thursday to Sunday.

International basketball icon Michelle Plouffe is slated to be honoured there on Saturday as she transitions from competing to coaching in retirement.

Speaking of sports, the Elks face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday at the Commonwealth Stadium, and they’re kicking off August with a flyover salute by the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Both teams battle it out for the first-ever Salute to Service Cup in a celebration of the frontlines and first responders.
