ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- Federal fishery officials have closed 63 of Newfoundland's 185 recreational salmon rivers because of low water levels and warm water temperatures.
The closures mainly affect rivers in the central and western regions of the island.
Erin Dunne, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans acting manager for recreational fisheries, says conditions will need to improve before the rivers can reopen for fishing.
The main stems of the Humber, Exploits and Gander rivers are not affected by the closure.
The province's recreational salmon fishery opened in June and will close in all areas by Sept. 15.
Dunne says there will be no extension of the salmon fishery because the closures were a result of environmental conditions.
